Home maintenance to-do lists are constantly evolving with new problems to fix. But it’s much easier to manage when you have the right tools on hand. Take a look below to learn about some of the main types of tools and equipment you will need to complete repairs, DIY projects, and more.
One hammer, many uses
A steel claw hammer is a must-have addition to any homeowner’s toolkit. These are key for projects that require driving nails into objects such as drywall to hang artwork and other types of decor. Likewise, it’s just as important to have a steel claw hammer for when you need to dislodge nails from surfaces.
Make repairs, build furniture and more with an Allen wrench
Designed in the shape of the letter “L,” Allen wrenches are used for tightening or loosening hex bolts. These bolts come in various sizes; therefore, it’s best to have an Allen wrench set with multiple sizes of hex bit sockets. Although they’re often used for building furniture, Allen wrenches are also relied on for home repair jobs like fixing clogged garbage disposals and installing new replacement parts on your lawn tractor.
Keep everything in place with a screwdriver and power drill
Screwdrivers are among the most important tools to keep around the house. Household goods are built with many different screwdriver types that vary by size and purpose, so it’s equally vital that you have a set with various bits. For more heavy-duty jobs that involve working with more rigid materials, consider purchasing a power drill set.
Accuracy is key, and so is a measuring tape
Whether you’re hanging curtains, building a garden box or doing any other type of project that requires precise measurements, a measuring tape is necessary to complete each job with precision.
For mower maintenance: spark plugs, oil and filters
If you own a John Deere riding lawn mower, then you already have the right machinery to keep a well-kept lawn. However, the next step is to make sure you have the tools you need to keep your mower in top condition. Whether you own a John Deere 100 Series riding lawn mower or another model, be sure to check the owner’s manual so you know which parts are recommended and compatible with your model.
One of the various lawn mower parts that are helpful to have on hand is a spark plug, which is critical to starting the mower (it's typically recommended to change your mower's spark plug every 50 hours). Also, because your mower's oil needs to be replaced on a routine basis, be sure to have an ample supply of the proper type of oil compatible with your model. And because the air and fuel filter can affect its performance, be sure to keep new filters on hand when it's time for them to be replaced.
